Manobo Situition in Magpet Area

MCL staffs conducted an interview for three pupils in Sitio Lubas, Barangay Amabel, Magpet, Cotabato.

Barangay Manobo is one of the Target areas for
Day Care Center Project

Hike... hike... hike... Six kilometers from the Brgy. Manobo, you will reach Sitio Apog-apog, one of the prospect areas for Day Care Center construction. Beauty of the place is apparent, but poverty is unseparable to its people.

COTABATO City, Philippines?Communist rebels and government forces clashed on Saturday
in a remote village in North Cotabato,
leaving two guerillas killed and four soldiers and six rebels wounded.

Colonel Prudencio Asto, speaking for the 6th Infantry Division,
said soldiers belonging to the 57th Infantry Battalion were in Sitio (settlement) Dalag,
Barangay (village) Manobo, Magpet, North Cotabato,
to pursue New People’s Army rebels who were reportedly harassing civilians, mostly Manobo tribesmen.

Asto said the soldiers were patrolling the village when fired at by the rebels
who were on a higher ground, triggering a firefight that lasted for more than an hour.

between government forces and communist guerilas there.

The evacuees are staying in barangay halls and other government facilities
in the villages of Manobo and Kinarom
for fear of being caught in the crossfire
once they return home.
Many have sought shelter from their relatives.

Water System Project
July 10

This Water System Project (DAM) has its advantage and disadvantage in effect that it has on people, especially who live nearby riverbank. People of Gokotan Village agree with such project, but what about the people whose source of income is mainly dependent on fishing?

With the abundance of children living in the area,
it is a qualified prospect for Day Care Center Project

Lights and Shadows of Irrigation

One of the ways for the poor to make a living is by selling river fish, as they don't have a piece of land to plant corn. Some cannot afford to go to school. It sounds exaggerated, but this is the reality of their lives.

Fish costed twenty five pesos each, one hundred pesos for four pieces (about 2 USD).
Parents told that $this is their livelihood since childhood.
Food crisis greatly experienced during dry season.

O
nly those people have agricultural irrigation can assure daily bread.

The problem is even more difficult when flood occurs with mud. Logging in the forest results into landslide so then flood starts.

This is a mudslide in the mountain area which also beleived to flow down

In addition to it, always have a role in waterways and can no longer come with many lush water plants, removing weeds, will also have removed the mud.
However, raising in the river side of kankong a Filipino vegetable food and water lilies cause failure to the farmer side, planting rice and corn. The reason is, the water overflows during flood and goes into the neighboring field.

NGO extends help to Philippine flood victims

Kyodo

PIKIT, Philippines ? A Japanese nongovernmental organization extended assistance to flood victims in a Muslim rebel-controlled village on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao over the weekend.

News photo
Out of the storm: Children displaced by floods sleep at an evacuation shelter in Cotebato on Mindanao Island in the Philippines on June 20. KYODO PHOTO

Tomo Matsui of the Mindanao Children's Library Foundation, based in the island's central province of North Cotabato, led the distribution of tarpaulins and clothes to residents of Kabasalan, a remote village of this town that has been submerged in flood waters for almost a month now.

Incessant rains caused by three storms that hit the country this month have swelled major rivers and tributaries in the region, causing heavy flooding in low-lying towns and cities. A major river system clooged by water hyacinth was another contributing factor.

Several hundred thousand people in central Mindanao have been affected by the flooding, with tens of thousands now sheltering in evacuation centers.

"The Mindanao Children's Library Foundation is mainly for children, but we help those who are in need, regardless of the circumstances. If we made them happy, then that's good," Matsui, 58, said, speaking in the local Cebuano dialect.

With a population of a little over 3,000, Kabasalan is an area controlled by the secessionist Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

"We are very grateful to Tomo-san for their help, said village leader Teng Oba.

"These tarpaulins and clothes are a big help to us already. We use those tarpaulins to add cover to our roofs during rainy season, or as cover when we sail to catch fish, or as drying mats for our corn during the dry season," he said.

Last week, the foundation conducted similar missions in six other rebel-controlled villages of Pikit believed to be under the jurisdiction of another rebel group, the Moro National Liberation Front.

"Sometimes, if I think about it seriously, I feel afraid a bit. But knowing that there are many children there and their situation is very pitiful, my fear dissipates," Matsui said.

MCLF President Asrie Sabil Hussain and Pikit deputy social welfare head Mary Grace Cadungog said proper coordination with municipal leaders ensures their safety against the rebels.

Aside from Cadungog, Naomi Ochiai, Japanese representative to the International Monitoring Team of the ongoing peace process between the Philippine government and the MILF, joined the MCLF's mission on Sunday.

MCL started its support to Flood Victims in some Barangays and Sitios of the Maguindanao Province.
